Why so many rices?

A friend once asked me, why does Bio Basics offer so many rices? I just need one rice.
Really? I asked.

That kicked off a conversation, which was a "light bulb" moment for him.
An "aha" moment.
Hope this will be too for you.

We offer 60 rices, because rice is not one homogenous grain.
How can just one grain be ideal for all ages, seasons, occasions, cuisines, & meals?
It is like saying humans are all the same everywhere.
No, we are not. Each of us has a unique finer-print, remember?

Nature is Diverse.
So is our cuisine. At least, these days.

Gone are the days, when lack of trade, transport and communication dictated that our forefathers ate only what they could grow locally.
They were exposed only to that type of food.
But today, some of us are exposed to other cuisines (from across the world), and different dishes from other parts of India.
But at the same time, food companies have started restricting the diversity to just one or two rices or flours (attas).
Because that is easier for them to manage and scale, reach more customers, and earn more revenue and profits.
In this transformation, we families lost out.
We are exposed to a lot more cuisines than ever before, but are constrained to the limited fare these big food companies offer.

So when our cuisines are so diverse, why won't our grains be diverse as well?
Think about it.

So here at Bio Basics, we recommend trying out various rices, figuring out what dish to make from it, and choosing the rice-dish combination that you personally like the most.
That is what keeping an open mind is all about.
That is diversity.

Not only does it help agro-bio-diversity (and spread the risk of loss of varieties across a larger group of rices),
but also it helps balance out nutrition for each of us, as each rice carries a different micro-nutrient profile.
This also helps the farmer grow the rice most suitable to its terrain, and thereby eliminate any external chemical intervention, like fertilizers or pesticides.

Above all, each rice has a taste, texture and flavour unique to it.
Try it out to see for yourself.
