Loktimachi Rice (Raw)

Description
  • Traditional rice variety from Chhattisgarh

  • 100% organic and natural

  • Ideal for summer consumption

Loktimachi is a medium-grained, fragrant rice cultivated by tribal farmers in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The rice is whitish-yellow in colour and has a mild fragrance. It resembles a little fly and is apparently how the rice got its name. Scented rice like Loktimachi is recommended, especially for summer. Because it is light to eat, children will love it, and the aged who don’t have an appetite will enjoy eating it. Loktimachi Rice is easy to cook and can be used as table rice or for making biryanis, pulavs and any kind of rice preparations.

The Story

Chhattisgarh is known as the rice bowl of India, where a wide varieties of rice are grown, including Loktimachi and Javaphul. Dr. Richharia, a prominent rice scientist who worked in Chhattisgarh, documented over 20000 varieties of rice in Chhattisgarh.

Bio Basics sources Loktimachi Rice from a small organic farming collective, which encourages tribal farmers to grow their traditional rice. This group also helps farmers market their produce.

To create awareness and promote fragrant kinds of rice from all over India, Bio Basics runs a campaign called ‘Beyond Basmati’. We believe it is our responsibility to help preserve and promote these fragrant kinds of rice, which may otherwise not survive future generations. We call our initiative ‘a gift to the future.
