Grown by a certified organic farmer group in the dryland regions of Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu, Red Sorghum—locally known as Irumbu Cholam—is a resilient ancient grain cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. This traditional millet is processed in small batches by farmer-owned facilities to retain its unpolished form and rich, reddish hue. With its roots in indigenous agricultural practices and a rising reputation in the wellness industry, Red Sorghum continues to be valued for both its heritage and its nutritional merit.

Promotes Digestive Health: With its high dietary fiber content, Red Sorghum supports regular bowel movements, improves gut motility, and helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome—reducing the risk of bloating, constipation, and digestive discomfort.

Supports Heart Health: Rich in magnesium, iron, and antioxidants, Red Sorghum contributes to better cardiovascular function. It may help reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and regulate blood pressure naturally.

Boosts Iron Intake: Known as Irumbu Cholam (Iron Sorghum), it is naturally high in iron, which supports red blood cell production, combats fatigue, and prevents iron-deficiency anemia, especially in women and children.

Aids in Weight Management: The combination of complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber in Red Sorghum promotes prolonged satiety, curbs unhealthy snacking, and supports balanced metabolism—making it ideal for weight-conscious diets.

Strengthens Bones and Muscles: Its magnesium and phosphorus content supports bone mineral density and muscle recovery, contributing to skeletal strength, especially in aging individuals and growing children.

Naturally Gluten-Free: As a gluten-free grain, Red Sorghum is a safe and nourishing alternative for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or inflammatory gut conditions aggravated by wheat or barley.

Store Red Sorghum in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. To extend shelf life, especially in humid climates, refrigeration is recommended. When stored properly, the grain retains freshness and nutritional quality for up to 12 months. Avoid exposure to moisture to prevent infestation or spoilage.

Red Sorghum should be pre-soaked overnight to improve its digestibility and reduce cooking time. Once soaked, pressure cook using a 1:4 grain-to-water ratio—give 4 whistles on high flame followed by 5–6 whistles on low. This cooked grain can then be used in a variety of traditional dishes. It works particularly well in idli batter using a 2:1:1 ratio of red sorghum, idli rice, and urad dal. You can also prepare dosas, rotis, porridges, and adai using either the whole grain or Red Sorghum flour. Its dense texture and hearty flavor make it an excellent, naturally gluten-free alternative for daily meals.
